30 Years Strong and Looking Ahead October 9, 2007
Increasing women's participation in public decision-making, engaging youth, and creating a more inclusive society are some of the issues the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women will explore through a forward-looking lecture marking its 30th anniversary.
Jennifer Corriero, an international leader in youth and technology, will present Women, Technology, and the Future of Work on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m in the Saint Mary's University Sobey Building in the Scotiabank Conference Theatre.
"Since the advisory council's first meeting in October 1977, we have much progress to celebrate," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. "In this country, where we are supported by the foundations of democracy and transported through new frontiers of technology, our future is wide open."
Ms. Corriero has developed one of the world's most successful youth-oriented online communities and not-for-profit organizations, called Taking IT Global. With more than 160,000 users in more than 200 countries and territories, the website is a platform, resource and network for today's youth who want to change the world.
The advisory council and the Local Council of Women of Halifax present the Agnes Dennis Lecture every October to mark Women's History Month. The series is named after one of Halifax's feminist superstars, who used her position as wife of newspaper publisher William Dennis to further the causes she believed in. Also sponsoring the event are Saint Mary's University and Democracy 250.
