Democracy 250 Hosts Special Ceremony for New Canadians January 30, 2008
Twenty-five new Canadians from 16 countries were sworn in today, Jan. 30, at a special Citizenship and Immigration Canada ceremony.
The ceremony, hosted by Democracy 250 co-chairs John Hamm and Russell MacLellan and presided over by Citizenship Court Judge, Linda Carvey, kicked off a year-long celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the first elected assembly in what is now Canada.
Members of the Nova Scotia Legislature, the judiciary and the RCMP were also in attendance.
Mr. MacLellan welcomed new Canadians and guests. "It was the perfect start to a year in which we will celebrate Nova Scotia's pioneering role in shaping parliamentary democracy in our country," said Mr. MacLellan.
"In many respects, what happened here in Nova Scotia 250 years ago, started our nation on the road to democracy and created the conditions that led people to choose Canada as their new home today."
Dr. Hamm said "Canada is a country broad in scope and big of heart. It is recognized the world over for its generosity and the abundance of freedoms it provides its citizens."
Premier Rodney MacDonald, Leonard Preyra, on behalf of Opposition leader, Darrell Dexter, and Stephen McNeil, leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, were also on hand to bring greetings to new Canadians.
Tunisia, China, Ethiopia, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Russia were among the 16 countries of origin represented at today's ceremony.
