General Hillier Named Honourary National Chair of Democracy 250 June 10, 2008
Democracy 250 co-chair John Hamm today, June 10, announced that Gen. Rick Hillier, Canada's Chief of Defence Staff, will be the Honourary National Chair of Democracy 250.
"I am delighted that Gen. Hillier has agreed to support Democracy 250's objectives and to help bring national attention to a proud Nova Scotia first," said Dr. Hamm. "Gen. Hillier is greatly admired and deeply respected for his service to his country. His remarkable skills as a leader and communicator will bring prominence and prestige to this special year of celebration."
Gen. Hillier, who will retire as Chief of Defence Staff in July, said he is proud to be a part of any effort that recognizes the tremendous sacrifices Canada's veterans have made, and the men and women serving in uniform today continue to make, in the name of democracy.
"I was pleased to learn that in planning this year's celebrations, Democracy 250 stated its intention to recognize and thank past and present members of Canada's military for standing firm for democracy, both at home and abroad. I am proud to support this initiative," said Gen. Hillier.
Democracy 250, a non-partisan body, was established in April 2007 with the unanimous consent of the Nova Scotia Legislature to oversee celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of parliamentary democracy in Canada. It is co-chaired by former premiers John Hamm and Russell MacLellan, and supported by an all-party management committee.
